What practice area, if any, lends best to the highest paying in-house positions? Forum

What practice area, if any, lends best to the highest paying in-house positions?

Of course, landing a high paying in-house gig is not a given.

But assuming all else being equivalent (number of years' experience, school attended, rank, etc.) what practice area would be best as a springboard to higher paying in-house jobs? Or, as a corollary, what practice area opens up the most in-house opportunities?

Anything transactional will open up a lot of inhouse opportunities. On the flip side, try not to be a litigator if you want to go inhouse since those positions are few and far between.

In terms of highest paying jobs, most GCs I've worked under seem to have a securities law background, so consider that as a practice area while in BigLaw.

Interesting. I heard that M&A set people up best to become GC.

I have the impression that, for litigators, patent folks have an advantage. (1) true? (2) strictly out of curiosity, how do salaries compare to what, say, M&A folks get?
