Reasons not to do drugs as law student?
If I'm going to biglaw as a litigator, and might have to go to the government at some point for career advancement (also I am curious if this is a common thing for advancement or as an exit option), is there any reason to avoid doing drugs? Not talking about hard drugs, but literally just smoking weed. It is decriminalized in my state.

Drugs, even marijuana, are part of security clearance investigations that are required for many DOJ positions. You can find more details on what they're interested in online. It is possible to get a clearance despite use but it can be difficult. They could conceivably also cause C&F or other background check problems, but they will cause clearance problems.

Not a super broadly applicable data point, but I had a summer associate in my class-year who got fired/no-offered when he tried to take advantage of the firm's "we will place you at a client for a few weeks as part of your summer!" gig, and the client drug tested (even though the firm didn't). When he failed the drug test, the client also complained to the firm about it and he got summer shitcanned and I never saw him again.

Shitty idea by the firm to second an SA, shitty practice by the company that drug tests, shitty of the company for firing the firm over it, shitty of the firm to fire the SA for it.
