Can I buy a new chair?
I work at the NY office of a mid-sized national firm, and my desk chair is uncomfortable beyond belief.
Can I tell the office administrator I'm willing to pay for a new chair? I don't think doing it behind anyone's back would be smart in case they somehow notice.
I'm supposed to be in the office during business hours M - F ...

For my sanity I choose to believe this is a deftly executed troll post

OP here - it is not a troll. I am actually in pain... I've had ~10 jobs in my life and this chair is sooo bad. I actually leave the office at night in pain.

Ask them to buy you a Herman Miller Aeron and when they won’t get one for yourself and have it shipped to the office. Who cares what anyone thinks

Re: Can I buy a new chair?
Was actually very common at my prior firm to do this. Just ask them and mention the pain issues (bonus points if you go to a chiropractor or something and show an actual documented issue). If they don’t buy it then buy one yourself and label it as your property so no one steals it when you leave.

why would this be a troll? chairs can have a pretty significant impact, and it's not at all clear that a firm would pay for a new oneExpOriental wrote: ↑Sat Jul 17, 2021 10:41 pmFor my sanity I choose to believe this is a deftly executed troll post

Because why would need to ask permission…? Who gets fired for buying a chair?jotarokujo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 18, 2021 12:54 pmwhy would this be a troll? chairs can have a pretty significant impact, and it's not at all clear that a firm would pay for a new oneExpOriental wrote: ↑Sat Jul 17, 2021 10:41 pmFor my sanity I choose to believe this is a deftly executed troll post

I'd ask them for a new chair.

I bought all sorts of stuff for my office, including furniture. Your firm may or may not pay for a new chair, but as long as you don't get rid of your existing chair, you are not going to get in trouble for buying a new one.
