Lateraling out of a v100 firm to firm ranked around v50
Would starting at a firms like duane Morris, katten, blank rome, etc… make it impossible to lateral to a v50~ firm after a few years??

No. Especially now when the market is hot. But even when it was slow I knew people that did this. Most extreme that comes to mind was Fennemore Craig to Gibson Dunn.

After a few years may make it easier may make it hard assuming practice group is the same. There’s probably somewhat of a regional difference unless in major market.

In corporate? Definitely not a problem. In litigation? It's possible, but it definitely seems harder.

You can always lateral up in corporate. I know multiple Katten corporate associates who moved to V20 firms, all pre-COVID. Right now the market is even more favorable for laterals.
Lateralling up in litigation is more challenging and more dependent on school/grades, but it's far from impossible.

I jumped from a firm in the V60s to a V10 firm in the corporate space, so certainly doable. But it took a bit of time and a lot of refining my approach to the lateral market to be able to land that jump.

Lots and lots of corporate associates at my high PEP V90 jumping to V5s/V10s/V20s.
In this market it's more a matter of if it's worth moving for same the same pay and likely more hours (lots of my colleagues have decided yes, yes it is).

Anon, you’re probably at one of the firms that is atypical for the lower v100 firms (Fenwick, Schulte, Kramer Levin). I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily hard for associates at any of these firms to lateral up.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 1:22 pmLots and lots of corporate associates at my high PEP V90 jumping to V5s/V10s/V20s.

Also, to OP, I think it’s very different based on the firm you’re at. I think Katten is seen much more as a peer than Duane Morris or Blank Rome to many of the V20 firms.

gotcha, seems like my best SA chances rn are low v100 firms , which I’m ok with … if anything I would lateral up to somewhere around v50 first… I’m in the nyc market btw
