Moving markets. Order of operations// Do I need to move firms

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jul 02, 2021 12:03 pm

I am a senior/mid level at huge v10. I am at point in life where I have decided want to move to hometown which is tertiary market for a variety of reasons.

Tertiary market has solid firms but I would probably take 25% paycut initially . Generally like current firm except location and long term prospects. I think long term I want to be at one of these firms based in tertiary market to make partner. I have stronger chance to make equity at those given home town connects etc.

Given the pay discrepancy and remote work, I think my preference would be to move to hometown and stay at current firm for a year or so.l. I also think I have no chance of partner and don’t really want to be one with current firm and don’t really want to gun for it. I have received above class reviews and am generally well regarded

I think preferences are as follows

1a. Move home and stay with current firm for a year, then lateral to hometown based firm. 1b. Move home and lateral to hometown based firm now (ie Jan 1).

2. Stay in big market for another year and lateral after next year.

3. Lateral within big market.

Given these prefs, do you think I should first approach current form to see if they will support remote? Or secure hometown job and then approach firm. Concern is if I get a hometown job then pass, when I want to lateral in a year or 2, they will think I’m flaky. On the flip side, if I approach current firm and they say no to remote, then they know / think I am on way out and have to deal with the risk that goes along with that
