Clerkships from biglaw?

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:09 pm

I'm a 2020 grad currently a first year in biglaw doing a specialized, mainly regulatory, practice. I would like to clerk, but am a bit intimidated about the application process. What is the best way to go about applying after some time spent practicing? What is the etiquette around asking partners for letters of rec for a clerkship? I am assuming this ask would not go over very well. Also, most of the writing I have done since getting barred has been in memorandum form and is definitely confidential, how does one go about choosing a writing sample in this situation? Any insights from people who have made the jump would be helpful.

Might be best to have this in the clerkships forum. I'm a 2018 law grad, worked for a bit in biglaw, and am clerking now. Partners understand people leave the firm and tend to be supportive of associates seeking out clerkships. Aim to ask maybe two law school profs and one law firm partner who you trust and have a good relationship with. As to the writing sample, you'll probably need to receive permission to use it as a writing sample. Once you get the go-ahead, you'll have to anonymize the document, including any identifying names, places, objections, addresses, etc.

As to your broader comment, it's very normal to clerk after a bit of time in practice, and some judges actually prefer it. You're also a VERY recent grad.

Think about how geographically flexible you are and what type of judge you'd like to clerk for.
