The other day I did a poll asking if associates are being forced to come into the office for valid business reasons or partner egos. [Link to original pointless harassment thread deleted.]
One person responded with one of the most angry responses I had ever seen. In substance, he said that partner egos were a valid business purpose, and that I had nefariously posted a poll when I should have only posted my thoughts on the question. He then said I shouldn't be able to use hyper-specific categories. But because he was so angry, I spent half an hour reading and rereading his post to see if I could make any sense of it to engage his points, and I couldn't. Partner egos aren't a business purpose, and I had posted a poll, instead of just posting my thoughts, for the same reason everyone does poll, to see what others think.
It reminded me of when I was accosted by a homeless woman, who was screaming at me and saying I did this and that to her. You want to listen, but at some point you have to tell yourself, "this person is crazy-level angry and it's not your fault." But these displays of poor mental health stay with you. What's going on in that person's life that makes them like this? (Of course, after others piled on this person, the terrible moderators on this board locked that poll, which had 100 responses in an hour, instead of just deleting those replies, but I'm pretty sure most of the mods have issues too. I mean, what kind of person spends most of their free time, for years, modding a forum.)
The thing is, I've seen this in biglaw pretty often, people who seem like they're about to blow, or maybe go the other way and commit suicide from the stress. Like they need emergency room-level mental health treatment. It's really disturbing. What do you when see that?
P.S. I picked "ignore it," because that's what I do IRL.
Poll - over the top, "yikes level" mental health issues in biglaw. What do you when you see it? Forum
