Hi all (anon for obvious reasons/can be outed from my profile)
I am a junior (1-3 years) at a V30 doing niche corporate work and have the opportunity to lateral elsewhere and work in general capital markets. I have a few questions and would be really (really) appreciative if people could weigh in on one or all of them
1) While I do corporate work, I've never been a "finance" guy (and as a bonus, I really suck at math). Do those in cap markets feel like this is a barrier to excellence? Regardless, are there any books/resources that can help fill this gap (knowing more about investment banking/capital markets)?
2) What is the path in house like? I've seen differing views on this. While I understand there are some securities positions, is something like general counsel in the picture? Or is it more specific positions in house?
3) How does cap markets in the top firms do in a recession? Having job security is important and I understand cap markets can suffer in a downturn (though I recognize it's booming now).
Would be a bonus for anybody to also just explain the day-to-day/lifestyle/hours especially in these busy times.
Thanks you!

Re: Capital Markets - is it the right path?
I'm in M&A, but would occasionally get dragged in to help with capital markets work as a junior at my V10.
I found the work intensely unpleasant. I would try to find some way to get a sense for whether you like that kind of drafting work before you make the switch, or at least talk to someone else who has gone from corporate/M&A to capital markets as a junior. The only person I know who did that hated the work and switched back, but that's a small sample size and may have been due in part to particular circumstances (hours, lack of supervision).
