How do conflicts checks work?
How do conflicts checks actually work? Do I just provide the information to the firm I am laterally to and then they use that list to cross-check against their own matters? I am worried that if they contact my firm I will be fired

While they won't contact your firm, there is a nonzero chance (but to be clear, very small) that it gets back to your firm via a client if new firm needs a conflict waiver. Happened to me - wasn't an explicit "Oh, I heard so-and-so is leaving the firm" but more of a "Why is so-and-so on this email? Did they leave the firm?"
It's easy to play off as a client being mistaken, but it can happen.
