When to reach out to your firm about coming back after clerking?
I’m going to clerk soon and have been told by my firm that they can’t give me a firm offer to come back but that I most likely can and to stay in touch. I’m thinking about potentially trying to lateral to another firm in a different city post clerkship but still like the idea of being able to return to my firm. I would like to keep my options open. Would I be able to apply to other firms without word getting to my current firm? And also, how far in advance would I contact my current firm about coming back? It seems like other firms start hiring clerks in January/February but my clerkship will not end until August.

I did it like a month or two before to negotiate and get my formal offer.
