I've been working remotely since March of last year and have come to love it. Employer is planning to haul us back into the office soon but I'd rather not. Is anyone aware of legal jobs that are going to be permanently mostly or entirely remote?

Lots of tech companies are now posting jobs where you can be remote if you want. As an example, my company is happy to hire the person we want regardless of where they’re located in the US.

What if the person is a US citizen/permanent resident (so no issues regarding work authorization in the US and tax report) but is located outside the US?

YMMV, but speaking as non-FAANG tech here - it would depend on whether the company has operations in the host country. New jurisdictions are probably a non-starter, but Canada might not put you at a disadvantage to other candidates. I can tell you the pandemic and remote work environment has led to a lot of “Can I work permanent-remote from my villa in Maldives” type requests that do not go over well.

Yup, same here. Though for a lawyer I think there’s a slightly higher bar to be located somewhere different from the type of law you want to practice.

Hilgers Graben is a largely remote IP litigation boutique based in Lincoln, NE that generally hires biglaw alums. No idea what working there is like but their pitch is that they provide biglaw service at cut-rate prices due to "geographic arbitrage." They mostly seem to litigate in NE, CO, and TX.

Yes, they were mostly permanently remote even before the pandemic, sorry if I wasn't explicit enough.

According to Bloomberg law, Goodwin Procter is hiring associates around the country to work remotely on a permanent basis.

Agreed with the former post on tech companies (ex Amazon). That's probably your best bet if you want something semi permanently remote. I can't imagine more than a handful of firms having that option.
