How to professionally resign from a firm?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Mar 02, 2021 8:44 pm

I'm a 2L and I'm clerking PT at a V60 during the year. The clerkship would last until I graduate from LS and is at will. I have accepted a summer offer from a V15. I plan to resign from my current position before finals week. In addition to the standard two-week notice, what else should I do to not burn the bridge? Should I call/Zoom the partner/HR before sending in my resignation email? Should I email everyone in my practice group prior to my departure? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

It's a job. Talk to your main partner contact and tell them that you're planning for your last day of work to be [insert date two weeks from the current day], because [insert reason]. Thank them for having you on as a clerk and say it was a wonderful place to work. On your final day, you can send out an email to the group, assuming its not like a 100 person group. If it's a massive group, just hand pick/BCC the folks you actually worked with. In your email, you can say thanks and that it was wonderful working with everyone. You'll be starting your career elsewhere, and everyone should feel free to stay in contact at [insert email/phone number]. Also, this is a weird pet peeve of mine, but I'm not a fan of the word resigning. It seems overly dignified, and it's something I'd expect in the context of a CXO leaving the company or the Governor of a major state between Pennsylvania and Connecticut saying after getting hit with three sexual harassment allegations.
