First year and no new assignments
Started three months ago. Was very busy before, but now I am very slow (billing sometimes only 2 hours per day). And, I haven't gotten any new assignments. Should I be worried? Other first years seem more busy than I am, and the firm seems to be busy.

Re: First year and no new assignments
I think it's not unusual for first years to be fully occupied without any gaps in work, and what's going on with other first years is probably only instructive if you're in the same practice group and on the same cases or deals. Whether you need to worry is based on what the reason is for the lack of work - if your group is too busy to onboard you to something new is different from you somehow alienating your entire team (unlikely) or your group not having ANY work to give out. Is the rest of your group busy? What have other associates/partners said about workload? Have you reached out to folks and let them know you aren't busy?

Re: First year and no new assignments
Thanks for the reply. The other first years I was referring to are in my group. The group seems super busy. I spoke to some seniors, and they said not to worry. And, some of the seniors said they want to put me on some of their projects. Hopefully everything is ok...

Re: First year and no new assignments
If people in your group know you're not busy and they just need to put you on some projects, I wouldn't worry about it. Keep checking in with various folks (including your mentors if your firm assigns mentors) and enjoy the brief respite before you get slammed.

I wouldn't rest until I got new assignments.

You won't rest once you actually have new assignments, so when are you planning on resting?
It's totally normal to have lulls in work, especially as a first year.

What does this even mean? How do you make the assignments appear if they’re not there?
