Asking for relocation bonus + extra time off after offer?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Feb 24, 2021 11:24 am

Hello. Anonymous for some identifying factors. I just received an offer for a mid-size firm in New York. I received a verbal overview of my offer package, and was a little surprised when the firm didn't offer a signing bonus or relocation bonus (I am currently located in an office outside of the country). Would it be possible to inquire on such things?

In addition, in terms of start date, I would really like to take some time off after leaving my current position and was wondering what would be an appropriate time to give in terms of start date. I would love to start in June, but not sure if that is possible, as the partner did mention that they were slammed and ideally would like someone who started as soon as possible (although he did understand and agree that it would be okay to take a bit of a break between positions).

When I got my offer, HR/Payroll separately contacted me about moving costs. Maybe you will hear about that after. However, I would ask the firm directly since you’re moving countries, and that can cost like $20k.

For time off, I wouldn’t ask for June. We’re not even in March yet. May might me okay, but June is probably going to sound tone deaf when the partner said the team is slammed. For my move, I asked for some time off, but I got a lot of pushback (especially because conflicts took longer than anticipated). I still got a week, but obviously since you’re moving countries, they may be more amenable to like a month. I’d ask for a mid-May start and go from there. I feel like June is going to be a non-starter. 15 days isn’t a big difference, but saying May v. June feels like a huge difference (spring v summer).

OP here. Okay, so I guess I can ask about relocation bonuses after receiving the written offer letter?

In terms of time in between jobs, what is the usually amount of time people take off? I still haven't given notice to my current firm yet, and with winding work down and getting ready to move, I don't think I'd actually get much time to really "rest" if I ask for little :/ Is there a thread with datapoints on this?
