Resume Question

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Feb 23, 2021 1:50 pm

For a biglaw position on your resume, do you list Associate for the entire time you were at the firm or do you list the 2-3 months pre-bar license as "law clerk"? It seems odd to list them separately considering my offer letter says "Position as an Associate in the Fall of xx" and I got paid the same, did the same exact job, etc as I did once I got licensed. Although you can list both titles on the resume under the same employer, what about when filling out employment history for government jobs? If you list them separately, do you just copy/paste the description of duties/accomplishments?

I would never list those separately. The "law clerk" designation was a placeholder, and as you noted, your job duties, etc. never changed.

Agree with above.

Arguably, you can even list your summer associate time under the associate header.

Caveat emptor, resume readers beware. Not your fault if they don't use the dates of your law school education and summer employment to realize what you've done.

I've never seen anyone break out the law clerk period separately. Summer associate as distinct from permanent associate, sure, but not the time between taking the bar and getting results.
