Willkie, Goodwin, or Schulte (NY)?

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Feb 06, 2021 3:56 pm

I've been super fortunate and have offers from these three firms. I enjoyed meeting attorneys from all three firms, so I'm genuinely having a tough time deciding. Things that are important to me include:

1) Venture capital / emerging companies work. This is a real interest of mine- particularly working with tech startups, fintech, and blockchain. Goodwin has a reputation for this stuff, and the partners I spoke with in their tech transactions and private equity groups talked up their work. I'm just worried about how much of that work is done in the NY office in particular as opposed to Boston or SF / SV. Schulte does cryptocurrency / digital asset fund management work too. Not sure about Willkie.

Would also be OK with doing run-of-the-mill public/private M&A work, for which I think Willkie is by far the best option, but would be a second-choice practice area.

2) Exit options. I gather that Willkie and Schulte do a good job placing people when they leave, and that outgoing associates have a lot of options. Less sure about Goodwin given that it's the NY office of a Boston firm and may not have the longstanding connections, prestige, etc. Doubly so for venture capital / startup clients. I don't plan on staying forever and making partner is tough at all of these shops.

3) Job security. I've read Goodwin recently had a round of stealth layoffs and may be in the habit of overreacting to market trends, but associates I talked to didn't seem concerned about it.

Any insights into any of these three is really appreciated.
