Career reset for transactional attorney

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Feb 01, 2021 9:01 pm

I'm a midlevel/senior transactional attorney in biglaw (fairly highly ranked firm). I realized early on that I suck at this job but wanted to play it safe and ride it out. Especially bad at the project management aspects of the job (keeping track of various deliverables, coordinating review by partners and specialists, managing closings) which makes up a good part of a transactional lawyer's day. Blacklining a billion precedents to draft a provision (or disclosure) that is "market" is both difficult and insanely boring to me. Don't even get me started on risk factors. I think it's starting to become very clear to most folks I work with that I'm not cut out for this.

I actually enjoy drafting a contract (in the same way as one might enjoy writing a computer program); I just hate the precedent-searching aspects. (I love occasionally getting to draft from scratch where there are no precedents.) I also like researching and analyzing.

Maybe I'd do better in a regulatory practice, but at this point it feels too late to make the switch. I'm definitely willing to take a cut in pay/prestige, but I don't think that will help much.

Welcoming thoughts on how I can reset my career, either by moving into a different area or if you have any tips on getting better at the aspects that I mention sucking at. Thanks in advance!
