Is there such a thing as a satellite office in New York

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Feb 01, 2021 8:56 pm

Wondering about firms that are headquartered outside of NY but still have a major office in NY (like King & Spalding, Sidley Austin, Hogan Lovells, Baker Botts, O'Melveny, WilmerHale, Covington, Vinson & Elkins)?

Does joining one of these firms mean you're getting a second-rate experience supporting the partners at HQ or is it just as good of an experience as anywhere else?

They'll all claim the NY office is just as legit as its HQ. Generally they're right (in some cases, the NY office is actually still probably the better one to work, even). Freshfields and UK-based magic circle firms are a little different, in the sense that their London office is really where it's at (and while they are the undisputed leaders in their home markets, they end up more like upper-mid-market in NY)

As someone who works at the NY office of a biglaw firm that is not headquartered in NY--I would say it completely depends on the firm. For example, I doubt the Kirkland NY office feels like a "satellite" to their Chicago office, but a 50-attorney NY office will likely feel that way towards their 500-attorney HQ in San Francisco.

A helpful metric would be to look at the size of the HQ (in terms of attorney headcount) versus the size of the NY office. Otherwise, it really depends on the dynamic of the firm and the partners in the NY office (i.e., are they bringing in their own business and clients, or are they primarily servicing clients that were brought in at the HQ?), which unfortunately you won't be able to figure out as an OCI candidate.

Really depends on the firm. Wilmer does NOT feel like a satellite at all for instance.

Not sure Covington, but Sidley's NY office holds it own. Also, not sure about A&P, their NY presence may have grown a lot with the Kaye Scholler merger, but they just be entirely different firms in NY compared to DC.
