Who to ask about the "touchy" subjects?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jan 26, 2021 3:56 pm

Hello everyone,

I was fortunate enough to get a few offers for this summer. During the interview process, I stayed far away from issues of compensation and work/life balance. Now with offers in hand, who do I ask about these issues? I was planning on reaching out to a young attorney at the firm. All advice is welcome.

Also, I know some of this info can be found online, but one firm seems to have a balckbox regarding compensation outside of first-year associates and profits per partner.

Since you have the offer in hand, reach out to the recruiting contact who gave you the offer and ask if you can speak with a couple of junior associates, or perhaps reach out to an associate you interviewed with who you felt you connected with. The attorneys you speak with might have an innate interest in talking up their firm (i.e. they want you to think it's a good place to work because they don't want to admit to others they are in a job they don't like), but other than that they don't have any real interest in being dishonest with you.

OP here, I appreciate the input. That's what I was thinking about doing.

I'd also recommend reaching out to any friends or close friends' mutual friends that you know work at those firms. I've found that people are willing to speak frankly about their firm when they're speaking to somebody that they've connected with through their personal, as opposed to strictly professional, network.
