Importance of 2L summer's prestige on 3L job search
If I do my 2L summer at a midlaw, would that make it harder for me to land a biglaw job 3L year? What exactly matters in a 3L job search?

Would it make it harder for you relative to what? Relative to biglaw? Yes. Relative to being unemployed? No.
What really matters for 3L job search is a) applying early (networking during your SA and trying to get your shit in by Aug. early), b) knowing that firms are only looking to fill specialist slots, c) being willing to fill those slots, d) expressing your interest as such, and e) having the summer experience, pre-LS work WE, or coursework to back up your interest (in that order of preference). A GPA improvement wouldn't hurt either.
