Is it crazy to go to STB NY for lit?
Chambers says that STB is just as much of a band 1 lit firm in NY as any other top firm (except, maybe, PW), but practitioners only associate STB with corporate practices. Is it crazy to go to the firm for lit, and if no, what are the exits typically?

Not really. They are not in Band 1 for general commercial lit, antitrust, or white collar. They are in Band 1 for securities litigation only.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 5:40 pmChambers says that STB is just as much of a band 1 lit firm in NY as any other top firm

Of course it is not crazy. And practitioners do not only associate STB with corporate. I think you are confusing TLS with “practitioners.” There are a handful of more highly regarded lit shops in NY. But STB has an excellent lit practice and is a a great all-around firm.

Yeah, I’m sure you meant to word your post more as hyperbole than a real question but it’s obviously not ‘crazy’ to work at a highly regarded firm’s highly regarded litigation group. There may be like 30 other places that are more prestigious but we’re talking summiting the peak of Mount Everest as opposed to stopping 300 feet short. Working there will result in indistinguishable exit options in 99% of cases and will be regarded as ‘less than’ working at say Susman and Godfrey only to your law school classmates, maybe some extremely elite federal appellate judges, and some boutiques.brazleton wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 8:42 amOf course it is not crazy. I worked at STB’s lit group and I will say it’s unquestionably the little brother of the firm. That said theres a ton of super smart people there and it’s a good place to start your career.

I was under the impression you're trying to be a litigator and tell STB that during interviews they won't really like it... but if you get good feedback and a good vibe from them then why not go there? You can definitely do worse.

Can you explain what you mean by "the little brother of the firm"ughbugchugplug wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 11:20 amI worked at STB’s lit group and I will say it’s unquestionably the little brother of the firm. It’s a corporate firm with a lit group that services its corporate clients, rather than a lit firm with a corporate group. The lit group primarily handles lit issues for PE client subsidiaries rather than people coming to the firm asking for the STB lit group to represent them. That’s a gross generalization obviously and the lit group has its own clients, but it’s more true there than at say PW.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 12:06 pmCan you explain what you mean by "the little brother of the firm"ughbugchugplug wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 11:20 amI worked at STB’s lit group and I will say it’s unquestionably the little brother of the firm. Also the corporate group brings in the money. At least while I was there, 9 of the top 10 revenue producing matters were corporate. Corporate people can become partner and lit people realistically normally can’t.
