Post Lateral CB Q - Tell firm I'm waiting on about competing offer?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jan 22, 2021 3:25 pm

I just completed a final round of interviews for a lateral position with a firm about a week ago (biglaw major market office), and am waiting to hear back. I have been sitting on an offer from another firm for longer than reasonable now (they didn't give me a deadline to respond to the offer). Should I reach out to the recruiting peeps at the firm I'm waiting on and convey that I have a competing deadline, or keep waiting? I am worried about jeopardizing this offer if I keep waiting, but at the same time I also don't want to risk rushing the firm I'm waiting on into a NO, as I'd definitely pick them if they were to extend an offer.

Yes, you should definitely tell Firm 2 about the offer from Firm 1 and should have done immediately after you had your CB interviews with Firm 2. It's not too late to do it now.

For instance, I recently did the lateral process during COVID. I received an offer from Firm 1 with no deadlines. Immediately thereafter, I reached out to all the firms I did a screener interviews, but had not heard back from, to ask them to expedite the interview process or they'd lose me as a candidate. A few firms offered callback interviews right away and I received more offers from those firms. I quickly accepted an offer from Firm 2 and went through the entire conflict check process and waited for it to clear conflicts before turning down the offer from Firm 1 (aka my back-up plan).
