Lateral callback thank you emails?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Jan 20, 2021 10:36 pm

I’m beginning the lateral process and I was wondering if thank you emails are required for callbacks in major cities (DC/NY/CHI). I know I personally hate getting them and ignore them, which is why I’m leaning no, but do other people generally expect to see a thank you email?

I don't expect them and don't fault folks for not sending them (always seemed a little superfluous unless you made a personal connection with your interviewer or actually wanted to follow up on something substantive). That said, your worst enemy in the process is that one person who does take little niceties like that seriously and would be chaffed, unreasonably or no, by not receiving one. It takes an additional 5-10 minutes to scribble it up and it's almost certainly harmless, so I always recommend sending them just in case.

Thanks. I’ve heard mixed things. Most people say not to do it unless I have some connection with the partner.

Still on the fence (mostly because I have a few interviews in the next two weeks and work has been hectic).

I didn't recently and it doesn't seem to have mattered, but it was a more tech-focused firm and role (WSGR/Fenwick/Cooley/Goodwin), which may impact such niceties.

I really enjoy getting the thank you note, especially if I liked the candidate. By then its too late to do anything since I already submitted the interview review, but it may make me slightly friendlier to you once you start as an associate if you send me one.
