Anon for obvious reasons
I'm currently a 3L and accept my offer to return to the V10 firm I spent the summer with. I recently received an offer for what would be considered a "unicorn" position by many on this site. What's the best way to go about reneging on my accepted offer? Just a quick email? Should I pick up the phone and call someone? Should I go through HR or with someone I'm close with from the summer? My school of course has a policy and consequences but how likely is a) the firm to notify my school; and b) my school to actually do something? Thanks all.

Any way you listed is fine.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Jan 11, 2021 5:31 pmWhat's the best way to go about reneging on my accepted offer?
a) V10s have 100+ summers and expect them to not show up for day 1 of associateship for myriad of reasons. You won't be missed. The corollary to that is that no one will care enough to exact vengeance either so I'd say the odds are low.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Jan 11, 2021 5:31 pmMy school of course has a policy and consequences but how likely is a) the firm to notify my school; and b) my school to actually do something? b) I don't understand what any school could possibly do because sit and fume that you slightly diminished their employment statistics.

Re: Reneging on V10 Offer?
Yeah, usually the biggest consequence your school can impose for something like this is barring you from OCI, which obviously isn’t a problem for you right now.
I do tend to think it’s better to call someone since you did work there and know people. You could email HR but also, if there’s someone you worked with during the summer who’d remember you, or a SA coordinator type person, I think it would make sense to call and try to do it as gracefully as possible - you had a great experience and are very sorry to pass on the really valuable opportunity to work there in future but the unicorn position was something impossible to turn down for your future goals. (I think you can get away with this assuming it really is a unicorn gig, and especially if it’s not another firm. It’s hard to make this pitch if you’re just trading up in firms or something.)
I mean if that’s just going to be too awkward and uncomfortable email is fine too, I still think it makes sense to reach out to someone you worked with, not just HR, but it depends if you think you want to try to maintain a relationship with them in future. If you really don’t care about having any contact with them in future you don’t need to bother.

Re: Reneging on V10 Offer?
congrats
fuck your school, fuck the v10, fuck the free world... nah ahhh they can't tell you nothin (kanye vibes)
now that i've been in the work force for a bit, my advice is to do what's best for you, because the firm will always do what's best for it at your expense. again, congrats. personally, i'd give a call and get the satisfaction of personally telling the office manager to tell the partners to fuck off - politely, of course.
