Any US Biglaw Employees working from Canada?
If yes, how did you make it work? How did your firm react to your request? Also, how are taxes handled?
My boyfriend is Canadian and lives in Toronto. I would like to work remotely (post-covid) if that is possible.
Thanks.

Cdn here. Would you be looking into getting a TN-Visa at the Canadian border?

I would apply for PR in canada that would allow me to establish citizenship in a few years. I'm hoping to make arrangement work where I can work from Canada for US biglaw (hopefully at my current firm).

To add a related question to this thread: Is there a requirement to be licensed in Canada to practice US law from Canada? How do lawyers usually navigate this?

A bunch of my Canadian NYC Biglaw friends are currently working remotely from Canada (Toronto, Vancouver). Not sure how it would work if you're not Canadian though.

What's your practice area? If general corporate or cap markets, PM me. I'm pretty familiar with this dynamic. Otherwise I think you're fighting a pretty significant uphill battle unfortunately.nickofdime wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 8:45 pmIf yes, how did you make it work? I'm in finance (NYC). Is it only possible with general corporate or cap markets? Also, to clarify do you mean work for a Canadian law firm in their general corporate or cap markets teams or work for US law firm remotely in their gen corprorate or cap markets? Look forward to any ideas.

I've only looked into my province, but BC makes you get a little permit thing. https://www.lawsociety.bc.ca/becoming-a ... w%20Permit.

I mean US law firm with Canadian office with US-trained and qualified attorneys. What sort of firm are you at now and what year are you? If you're a midlevel at a V20-or-so firm doing finance work, it might be worth trying to lateral to a US firm with a Canadian office. I don't think it would be impossible -- especially in the present climate where they're begging for midlevel finance associates in any office that will have them.nickofdime wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 8:09 pmI'm in finance (NYC). If you're a midlevel general corp/finance associate lateraling to a Canadian office of a US firm (say in Toronto for example), what kind of work should you expect to be doing for the most part? Is it mostly advising Canada-based clients that are making inbound investments in the US?NoLongerALurker wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 1:52 amI mean US law firm with Canadian office with US-trained and qualified attorneys. One of the major issues is salary. I am hoping to retain my US salary. 8th year associates in Canada make about 170k if I'm not wrong. Just something that is on my mind.
Currently a junior associate at a v50. No canadian office. I don't think there are too many US firms with canadian operations.

A lot of Canadian clients raising capital in the States (for example, major TSX listed companies who are also listed on the NYSE). Reporting work for those companies. Handling US angle on anything cross border with Canadian co-counsel. IPOs of Canadian companies in the States. Those offices are very leanly staffed so you act “senior” quick — like third years basically leading $500M financings in the same way a 6th year in NY would. Can sometimes get looped into US based work (like if NY office is slammed and they need hands, they know you’re a third year who is as competent as a fifth year so you get put on some things that way). Great exit opportunities if you want to stay in Toronto (like, can’t really think of a better situation than being a third year at Skadden or PW in terms of third-year-exit-options if you want to be in Toronto doing financing kind of work), but a bit limiting if your goal is to be elsewhere or in a different practice altogether.sms18 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 4:08 amIf you're a midlevel general corp/finance associate lateraling to a Canadian office of a US firm (say in Toronto for example), what kind of work should you expect to be doing for the most part?
