How do background checks at law firms work? Do they just call up your school and previous employment? What kind of information is typically discoverable?

Most big firms use third party background check providers. You'll submit info on a form or online (such as education, employment, addresses lived) and they'll verify. Education checks are through an automatic database, employment verifications are usually a phone call to that company's HR dept, and criminal checks are by city/county/state that you lived in.
