Did he email you directly to do the assignment and not copy the midlevel? Usually you'd route stuff through the midlevel when you're that junior or at least ask the midlevel if they want to review.

For me, if an M&A deal was a senior, midlevel and junior, I wouldn't expect the junior to be sending work product directly to the senior unless it was blessed by the midlevel.

Noted on the bold. He actually asked the question post-review, as far as I can tell (because the comments came in fairly quickly after the question), so the purpose seemed to be more evaluative. They are in the process of collecting end of year supervisor reviews right now (not for stubs), so I guess it would make sense to want to know whether it was the fourth year's work product.

Trying not to give too many details, but the senior communicated the assignment to me directly because the midlevel was out of pocket for a few days. I had time to have the midlevel review once they returned, but I just didn't want to put extra work on their plate.

Eh, doesn't change my answer. Doesn't sound like the midlevel was in the loop. Generally, I'd route through the midlevel, but not in this situation.

I thought maybe there was a slight chance, but then I saw the mistakes, at least one of which showed pretty bad attention to detail (think page numbers/headers being messed up). There were some things I caught that I think maybe the senior wasn't expecting me to, but idk if it outweighed the bad.

Oh well. Guess I'll never know.

Thanks, I feel a lot better. After thinking about it, seems most likely he just wanted to know whether to send his feedback to both of us.
