First Year Start Dates Moved Up

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Sep 22, 2020 6:00 pm

Has there been any firms who originally deferred but has now changed their start dates to an earlier time?
Heard from a friend of a firm who announced a pushed up start date from their January deferral. Email sent the last few days.

Yeah, I think Akin had deferred until Jan but this week said they were doing a late Oct remote start.

Not sure if Goodwin explicitly told first years that they'd be starting later, but I think there was at least an initial expectation that start dates would be delayed possibly to Jan. 2021, but Goodwin has since decided to start first years in Oct. 2020.

Can confirm on the earlier poster that Akin has moved up from January to October 26th.

STB NY (possibly other offices too) rolled back (forward?) their start date and announced it right after the NY bar. Remote start dates offered 11/9, 12/1, and 1/13.

I guess this is a good sign for employment, right? Things are better than what was expected?

I really hope this becomes a trend for other firms. I'm still stuck til January. Don't know what to do with myself tbh

I’d be grateful for the money, but at this point, I have accepted and made plans for my deferral. I’d be a bit annoyed if my firm moved my start date up without warning at this point. Incoming associates have lives, too. Don’t jerk us around.

Lol who am I kidding, it’s biglaw.

Are they letting people choose between those dates or are they assigning them randomly?

I was told people are able to choose.

I'm at Akin, and when they sent the move-up notice they explicitly told us that they would honor any previous plans that we had already made. Don't know how that will hold up in practice, but I'm honestly just happy to get the money and experience now.

That is great. I don’t understand the firms that are doing delayed staggered dates but aren’t letting people pick the date they prefer.
