Re: Thinking of switching employers--Advice needed
Just wait until after the summer. Not sure firms are going to be doing 3L OCI this summer anyway. They’ll have a better picture of where things stand at the end of the year.

I think the comment from the v5 was most likely of a graceful response to you rejecting their summer associate offer, rather than a genuine invitation to apply in future. Even under normal circumstances, I don’t think you would have much of a leg up on getting a 3L offer compared to other qualified candidates.
And in the current situation, I’d be content with current firm and think about lateraling after you graduate and work for a bit. No chance firms are hiring 3Ls (unless some bk groups need bodies and can’t retool current associates).
I also wouldn’t be so sure you “don’t like” your current firms New York office— don’t know how you could know that at this point.

Agreed. "Welcome to apply to an associate position" doesn't mean they're keeping a place set at the table for you to come back. It means you're objectively qualified to work there (which of course you are, because you got an SA) and they'll pick up your resume if they have openings.RaceJudicata wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 10:44 pmI think the comment from the v5 was most likely of a graceful response to you rejecting their summer associate offer, rather than a genuine invitation to apply in future. This was my immediate reaction as well.

Did you not get along with the partners? If so, then that’s a little more difficult. If it was associates, there’s a chance that some/many will be gone by the time you start.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 2:41 pmThank you all for your replies.
Regarding my current firm's NY office, I had visited them during OCI season and interacted with a few attorneys from the groups I was interested in and just didn't think the office was a good fit for me. These limited interactions are all I had to work with for all the firms I was considering. So if I am to seek to move, I'd rather do so to a place I think would be a good fit.
As for the invite to re-apply, I did not mean to imply that they have a spot reserved for me but rather, as was noted, that they'd be willing to consider me again in case they need people. I think in normal times that would be a possibility since the firm has, this past year and the year before, reached out to 3Ls at my school who had turned them down, regarding re-applying for some openings they had--but I have a feeling that won't happen this year.
I guess my whole issue is whether I should try to reach out myself and inquire about openings, in a way and timing that is appropriate and that doesn't impact my standing with my current firm.
My concern is that if I don't start in NY, it's going to be difficult for me to go back to a top law firm there.
