Re: Leaving job early
So you intend to break an express commitment to your employer just about halfway through but don’t want anyone to know and don’t want to suffer any of the consequences of breaking your word. Peachy. Based on what you describe you should be fine. Your current employer will ask where you are going and lying or withholding is a bad idea, so be honest and heavily stress the personal reasons you say exist. Your current employer will only contact your new employer to bad mouth you if they see you as a jerk or if your supervisor him/herself is nasty. In this economy I’d imagine replacing you won’t be difficult, particularly given your junior status. So I would not worry much about it and just be honest if asked. Obviously no need to say any more than you already have to the new employer.Anonymous User wrote:Early career lawyer here, need advice. I agreed to a three year commitment at a government agency, and I'm 20 months through that commitment. For personal reasons, I applied to - and got a job offer at - another agency that would require me to leave early. I don't want it getting back to my current employer that I'm leaving early, and my new employer was told not to contact my current employer. I know when I give notice my current employer will be unhappy, but I don't want to make my remaining time unpleasant and I don't want my current employer trying to interfere with my job offer. Any tips/advice?
