3L lost post-bar offer because of COVID-19 Forum

I'm a 3L at a t30 that just got my post-bar job offer at a regional biglaw firm rescinded. The firm has laid off attorneys and staff as well. Needless to say, I'm devastated, and I don't know what to do.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do in this situation? I've applied to numerous judicial clerkships but haven't had any luck.

OP, I'm so sorry that that happened--truly. It's a very bad way to start off a career that you've undoubtedly worked very hard to achieve.

I would start mailing out some biglaw/midlaw feelers in some relatively hot practice areas right now and doing some coffee chats. People may not be hiring, but I'll bet associates have some free time right now. That way, if things pick up, you may have a few hot leads. You had a biglaw offer so you'll definitely be in the running again once things pick up.

Otherwise, I would say that a lot of things can change between now and end of the year, and hopefully, you'll be barred by then and be a lot more in demand.

That's all I can think of. I hope someone chimes in on whether now would be a time to consider non-biglaw/midlaw options.

Keep applying to clerkships. Look at state and federal. You might have to apply to hundreds but there are still people with openings for fall.

Do you mind posting the location of the firm that rescinded the offer?

I imagine you will not be the only graduate dealing with this. Especially if many bar exams are delayed or even cancelled. From a firm’s perspective, graduates are solely liabilities on the balance sheet and at this time it may not be feasible to add more liability.

My advice to you is stay positive, your plans have now changed. You may need to consider a different market, or practice area, or even public sector (gov jobs usually less affected by downturns). Hard to really give advice not really knowing more specifics of your situation.
