In-House: Bonus Typically Pro-rated?
Hi,
In your experience, has your bonus your first year in-house been pro-rated? I assume this depends in part on start date, so if you’re providing anecdotal evidence, would appreciate it if you provided the month you started as well.
TIA!

Re: In-House: Bonus Typically Pro-rated?
I recently took an in-house role at the end of January and my 1st year bonus will be prorated. Bonuses for the prior year are paid out in February of the following year. So my bonus for 2020 will be paid out in February 2021, though prorated down for 11 months since I joined end of January.

Mine was prorated, but I only worked two months of my first year. No performance ratings were given for workers that had not been there before-mid year, so it was just prorated target bonus. This sort of thing will vary widely between companies.

Mine was pro-rated as well to when I joined and same as nealric, no performance reviews for employees that start after mid-year

Everything is negotiable, mine was pro-rated but negotiated additional sign on stock comp with the foregone law firm bonus argument.
If you are coming into a company that hires like one lawyer a year, probably easier to negotiate than like Amazon.

Mine was prorated, as are the bonuses for everyone else who joins our company midyear. I was hired in July.

Re: In-House: Bonus Typically Pro-rated?
Worked at three in-house jobs:
First (hired in Q3) - bonus prorated, but got "sign-on" bonus to make up difference
Second (started right at YE) - moot issue
Third (hired in Q2) - negotiated no bonus proration, in addition to sign-on.
As others said, everything's up for negotiation, and worse they can do is say no. In the last instance, I did raise it after the numbers had been hashed out, but before offer letter was sent so it was more a part of the negotiations, rather than a counter-offer.
