What would you do?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Feb 26, 2020 11:12 am

Junior to mid level. Currently in midlaw. The difference between my firm and Cravath scale is 10-60k base (compression as years go on), and no real bonus to speak of. Work is less complex, but more autonomy. Partnership prospects are real.

I’m leaning towards sticking around, but curious what kinds of things swayed people one way or the other in this type of situation. (I have some opportunities to move up the ladder, but seriously considering staying out).

How much are you expected to work at your current firm? If your billable expectation is 1800 or so, then I would just stay put as you’re already in the dream spot for a lot of people leaving Biglaw. If it’s more like 2000, then I could see making the move to Biglaw if there’s a good fit, since we’re talking a huge amount of money.

This is OP. I’d say 1700-1900 is typical. My sense is that in big firms, you’re probably working more than the 2000 minimum...

I wouldn't for biglaw without an actual "push" factor driving you away from your current situation, or if you somehow need the extra 100k/year that you'd be making as a senior. (E.g. you and your spouse want to have three or four kids and live in NYC/SF)
