1L Summer Associate BigLaw Update Thread
Starting this thread to see if we can get more information on 1L SA movement from firms so far. The other thread hasn't picked up as much traction as others have in previous years, so I'm hoping this can get the ball rolling. Seems like firms are generally moving slower this year than they have in the past.

Many of the market-paying firms in Texas have sent out offers. First-hand I know of: Bracewell, Kirkland, and Baker Botts but I've heard rumors about others, including V&E, as well. Lots of callbacks happened early this month. I had mine as early as January 3rd. Kirkland filled their 1L class before the New Year. Had five callbacks, got two offers, no rejections, and cancelled everything else after I accepted the offer at the top of my list.

Not that it matters, but I've always been curious, what do firms look for in 1L hiring, since it sounds like many of them fill their 1L SA classes prior to student even receiving grades back (which seems interesting to me, since for 2L SAs grades are basically the only thing that matters)?

Diversity, special skill sets (foreign languages, finance background, etc.), legitimately charismatic/connected people who might be marketing assets from day 1 -- basically all of the "scarce resources" in the T14 student body that don't correlate very well with grades.TigerIsBack wrote:Not that it matters, but I've always been curious, what do firms look for in 1L hiring, since it sounds like many of them fill their 1L SA classes prior to student even receiving grades back (which seems interesting to me, since for 2L SAs grades are basically the only thing that matters)?

White & Case, Hogan Lovells, Covington, Simpson Thatcher, Ropes & Gray, Morgan Lewis, MoFo, and Cravath have already done callbacks/interviews.
Has anyone heard from Goodwin?

I think including the market when discussing firms is important and makes a real difference. For example, the person who mentioned that Kirkland TX filled their 1L class before New Year, that's def not true for their NY office because I recently got a screener. Simpson and Skadden have done CBs for Bay Area

Has anyone heard from White & Case NY? Radio silence since sending in my transcript post-interview.
