Venting Post - Silence After Lateral CB
Sitting in my office dreading the 5+ hrs of work that is still ahead of me today... so thought I'd make a post to let some of this frustration out. I am a first year associate desperately trying to switch firm/practice group. Had a CB interview about a week ago at a big regional firm in a practice group that I am really interested in, and radio silence since. The CB gave me renewed zest and hope for my career/future, so now I am just even more miserable than ever.
TLDR, would love to hear success stories from people who lateraled as a first year/changed practice area through lateraling, or just general stories about long silence after CBs turning into good news.

In a slightly different position in career but I had a second round interview (after a full day the first round) the second week of December. I got radio silence until yesterday... Stay strong. It's not like OCI where there's a set schedule and hiring committees are meeting at least weekly to make quick decisions.

It has only been a week, why are you even complaining? They are probably still interviewing people. I would not expect an answer for another 14 days. If that.Anonymous User wrote:Sitting in my office dreading the 5+ hrs of work that is still ahead of me today... so thought I'd make a post to let some of this frustration out. Don't lose hope, I know several people who have waited months to hear back from interviews.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!
So, through some obsessive search, I noticed that the job was posted on LinkedIn again the DAY after my interview.
Is this a horrible sign?

Re: Venting Post - Silence After Lateral CB
I went through a remarkably similar experience as a 2nd/3rd year associate trying to lateral. The short answer is don’t give up hope!
2 hours after my screener I was asked to do a callback so I thought I was off to a good start. After the callback I was told I’d probably hear within 2 weeks.
A week or so in I noticed the position reposted the day of my interview by some recruiters which I took to be a terrible sign (it turns out that was just a bad coincidence, the recruiters had not heard anything from the firm).
During weeks 3 and 4 I assumed it was a ding. I was offered the position 33 days after my callback and the partner who offered the job apologized for their slow moving process.

(1) What's your practice group and what type of firm are you currently at? If you are at a relatively "prestigious" biglaw firm it should be a matter of time before you are able to lateral to a more regional firm. E.g. I know many V50 coprorate juniors/midlevels who have lateraled to corporate/VC/public finance boutiques with much better lifestyles for not much of a paycut.
(2) What is your primary complaint about your current job? Bad hours, dislike practice, or bad culture? If it's the latter two, that can definitely be fixed by lateraling to other firms. As for the first, you'll have to do some diligence, because some regional mid-laws have comparable hours to biglaw for way less pay -- so if hours is your reason don't just take the first job that comes along just because you want to get out. The best solution to bad hours is going in-house (but even there a 9-to-6 isn't guaranteed -- again you'll have to do diligence), which is do-able even as a 1st year assuming you are corporate in a big city.

Re: Venting Post - Silence After Lateral CB
I know the feeling all too well.
Even with a recruiter, law firms would go completely silent on me. They wouldn’t respond to the recruiter regarding an update, etc.
I waited 4 months for an offer once. Some offers took a few hours, most took a day or two, but there was one that was an outlier.
I just assume I didn’t get the job and move on with my life, so you should do that too.
Also, regarding the job posting, I think 99% of that has to do with the firms needing X number of interviewees to meet those Manafield or whatever requirements and stuff. So, if they find someone they kind of like, they keep reposting to get enough interviewees so they can decide quicker whether they like the pool they have or whether to interview more.
