Top BigLaw in Miami

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jan 03, 2020 2:02 am

Note: For purpose of this question, Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod LLP and Podhurst Orseck were omitted. Poll options are listed in alpha order.

Please explain your reasoning

This poll makes no sense. Without more specific criteria, the best one could do is very rough tiers.

OP is trying to humblebrag that they got offers at all/most of these places and should be ignored until they ask useful questions.

I worked at one of the firms listed above. Idk why Bilzin was left out...

But, generally, people start off at one of the market firms (Weil, White & Case, and the few others), then lateral to the Miami firms (GT, HK, Akerman, Bilzin) later on after making $$$ for the better partnership prospects.

I worked at a Miami firm and knew I was making a lot less than my colleagues who lateraled in from market firms. So that’s something to consider.

Best is subjective, but, if we are speaking “prestige,” then its White & Case followed by Weil, I think. Then HK/Bilzin/GT, then Akerman/other market firms, then the rest.

Edit: not sure where to place Boies. Probably top tier, but I didn’t interact with Boies at all, so no clue.

Not at all -- just trying to better understand the market and learn from those who work in Miami

I apologize if it came off that way

This is useful, thank you.

I wanted to leave the criteria open so that people could describe their own criteria.

In other words, in some ways I am more interested in how people describe "best" than the poll results themselves.

Yes, I generally agree with this.

Any further thoughts on Weil v. White & Case though?

Not it Miami market, so I could be off, but isn't the Weil office basically a lit outpost? Nalp shows 1 lit partner, 11 lit associates, 2 corporate partners, and two corporate associates. White & Case on other hand has like 70+ people. Doesn't seem right to put Weil in same tier, though I'd suspect they are doing similar level work.

Has anyone heard reasons to not work at white and case in miami?
Do they do any local work?

People who work biglaw in Miami don't think about this stuff, and if they are, it's out of envy for a different firm. The most important factor is $, and you can find out who is at the top when it comes to that. How can someone even argue that their firm is more "prestigious" (in Miami of all places), while getting paid less than the other firm. Laughable.

McDermott is a glaring omission. Satellite-level comp and good partnership prospects. Good mix of local and national PE clients. Global leadership is based in Miami and they had a huge promotion round this year (it is a two-tier partnership though). No asshole culture.
