When should I start applying?

Post by hyang1021 » Fri Dec 20, 2019 12:17 am

So I am in a very unique situation and would appreciate any comments/insight. I graduated in 2016 and joined the military immediately thereafter (due to national requirements). I will be discharged in March 2021 and was wondering:

1. When should I apply? I will be returning to NYC and am thinking mid-small law that does litigation (I am also thinking local/state government gigs, but most of them are very clear about application/start date unlike firms). Biglaw is my last option because I would like to spend some time with my family.

2. Do I apply as a new grad? Or am I supposed to "lateral" (or apply as someone w/experience)? I have been serving as a JAG (military lawyer), but I am not sure if my experience as a JAG in a foreign country counts at all.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Best

What kind of experience did you get? I'd assume you're a lateral, just not a 1:1 on your class year.

OP here. Most of my work involved contract/military regulations review and giving legal advice re. law of war (e.g., can we strike this target without violating thr geneva covention, etc.).
