When to apply to SA positions?

Post by lj6711297 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 8:39 pm

Some quick background info;

1L interested in patent law. Planning to apply to SA positions in the city where I attend school. I am well aware a 1L SA position is hard to get but planned on applying to some to give it a shot.

My question is when to apply to these positions. This year is the first year where the Dec. 1st deadline is officially no longer. I have a list of firms currently, and I would say about 75% of them still have the Dec. 1 date for when they begin accepting applications. I planned on sending those out that day.

But for the other quarter, they are accepting applicants now. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on when to apply to these. Should I focus on finishing them up and sending them out ASAP (maybe the first week of Nov) or should I take my time and just apply the end of Nov/beginning of Dec?

Any advice is appreciated.

If they are taking applications early, it doesn't hurt to apply early. Worst case scenario for an early application, it doesn't get reviewed until after 12/1 and you haven't lost anything. Worst case scenario for waiting, their 1L SA slot(s) get filled before you apply.
