I work at a boring in-house gig that I stumbled into right out of law school. I hate the work and I would rather be a prosecutor (that’s why I went to law school). The prosecutors office I want to work for just posted their first opening in a long time BUT we are expecting a baby this fall and my work is going to give me several offs for parental leave. I’m not willing to sacrifice the paid time off with my kiddo. Do I apply and ask to start in the spring? Or just wait until their next posting (who knows how long that will be)? I’m inclined to apply and meet everyone and get my name out there, but I’m afraid they’ll be offended that I wasted their time interviewing when I don’t want the job right now.
Any thoughts?

I wonder how the prosecutors office would react if you were simply honest and said that you're applying now but, if offered, would want to hold off on starting until spring because you will be going on paternity leave during autumn. I don't see why they'd have a problem with it, it's not like they have to pay you while you're on paternity leave. I only see it hurting you if they are hiring for an opening that can't wait until spring because of an urgent need or won't be there in the spring for whatever other reason (e.g., budget). But maybe I'm missing something else?
