Starting career at a legit seeming plaintiff's firm - good idea?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Aug 27, 2019 7:03 pm

Rising 2L at lower T13. Unfortunately had crippling illness my spring semester (not that anyone cares - but facts are facts) so my grades are in the toilet (by which I mean .1 below median which apparently qualifies).

Still have a couple of potential callbacks (firms that haven't rejected me clearly waiting for the top candidates to see if they accept so a roll of the dice) and zero bites from mass mailing. I did a regional OCI and really clicked with the founder of a plaintiff's firm. Me and the guy instantly got along (seems like a bro friendly place) and even though it's in a major secondary metro and I'm a New Yorker, I would seriously consider accepting if offered.

I wanted to do corporate mostly for the exit options once I realized big firm litigation involves basically zero trial work. I've worked as a paralegal at places in NY ranging from midlaw to """shitlaw""" so I have some idea of what it's like, and have experience in finance so I'm used to immensely long hours.

I wasn't seriously considering this but looking at the firm's website it seems to bring in tons of cash working on high end class actions and other cool complex plaintiff's cases. I worked in a small plaintiff's firm that actually wasn't so bad and was fairly prosperous and these peoples settlement/case values are off the charts in comparison. Seems trial focused and eat what you kill and is in a low COL metro that's dead by NY standards but would probably be fun on what would be an enormous paycheck over there (haven't gotten to salary yet but given it does OCI at my school I assume around low six figures to start based on similar firms).

Assuming mass mailing/remaining NY biglaw eventually bites and I get to do a V whatever market firm vs this, would I be crazy to go for this?

You would not, assuming you want to stay in litigation and probably don't want to go biglaw. Some of these firms are really excellent, offer great opportunities, solid QoL, and stellar pay. Here's a good rule of thumb: check the NLJ's plaintiffs' hot list for the past 5-10 years. Any firms that show up multiple times are probably legit national players.

I'd be very curious how many attorneys are in the firm (bigger isn't necessarily better, but I'd be nervous about a firm of <15 attorneys), what their long-term career options are like (including the path to partner), how they do their compensation and bonuses, etc.
