Odds of getting an offer if...
What do you think the odds of getting an offer are if a firm I've done a callback for has rejected one of my friends but sent me an email the same day they sent him/her a rejection saying they are still interested in me and would get back soon? Obviously it all depends on if enough of the people who already have offers decline but do you think I have a better than not chance? This is a pretty big firm. Talking V20.

It almost never depends on this.Eman1994 wrote:Obviously it all depends on if enough of the people who already have offers decline
Stop trying to predict the future, and start reaching out to other firms about interviews (unless you've already landed a summer gig and this is just a firm you're really interested in).

Not OP, but can you explain why waitlist movement doesn’t depend on people with offers declining?cavalier1138 wrote:It almost never depends on this.Eman1994 wrote:Obviously it all depends on if enough of the people who already have offers decline

I do have other offers and this is just a firm I'm really interested in...

I don't know why you assume this is a waitlist. OP got an email that was likely sent to dozens of other candidates who are still in consideration for a position. It doesn't mean that they've given out all their offers and are just waiting to see who declines.Anonymous User wrote:Not OP, but can you explain why waitlist movement doesn’t depend on people with offers declining?

Your friend got a hard pass early in the process. It's possible you are on a "waitlist," but you could also be on the list of candidates that made the first cut and are waiting for hiring committee review and approval.

In my experience on the recruiting committee of a large biglaw firm, it almost always means it’s a waitlist situation. Either waiting for declines or waiting to interview other strong candidates with similar expressed interests.
