Why do many law students hold on to multiple offers from firms for a long period of time? I have classmates holding on to offers for over a week as they make their decision. I really want them to decline a few firms so that I might be able to get an offer. This seems to be a real problem. Stop hogging all the offers!

If you think that your chances of getting an offer are dependent on someone else rejecting theirs, then you're probably (a) wrong and/or (b) screwing up callbacks. Focus on what you need to do to get your own offers, not on whatever magical external forces you think will sway the odds in your favor.

Because it’s a genuinely difficult decision and you can learn a lot about a firm’s culture and what they are good at in a few weeks. Just casual conversations with professors can tell you a lot especially if you have practice areas in mind.

This. Most firms make more offers than they have expected spots for understanding that some candidates will go elsewhere. No reason to place your hopes on a rejected offer actually opening up spots for others.

Agree with the above. Firms are generally good regarding yield, so it isn’t often that they need to make additional offers.

I’ve noticed that when firms need more summers for specific practice groups after everyone has accepted/declined, they usually repost around October for a specific position (i.e., healthcare) and do callbacks again.

Very presumptuous of you to believe that your classmates holding an offer is what is keeping you from getting an offer. People are choosing their summer job as well as their career. If you were in the same position, I'm sure you would do the same thing.
