Help- how to accept an offer in this situation

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Aug 19, 2019 12:39 pm

After the interview, I told Firm 1 that I needed to make a decision shortly because I got another offer (from Firm 2). Firm 1 gave me an offer the other day on Saturday and I told Firm 2 that I will not accepted the offer from Firm 2.

Then Firm 2 asked me to reconsider it. I have not responded to Firm 2, but I was actually reconsidering it. The timing was not the best. This happened 10 days ago, and I now want to accept the offer from Firm 2.

What should I tell Firm 2?? I do not want Firm 2 to think that I broke a promise with Firm 1 (I have not yet accepted the offer from Firm 1 in fact but told Firm 2 that I accepted it for some reasons that I cant reveal here)

I really dont know what to say

Just call them and say you accept.

Telling firm 1 no is harder part if you told them yes otherwise this is a complete non-issue.

If you have to make up something just say it turns out you didn’t officially accept firm 1’s offer yet (no signature or something like they didn’t make official offer yet and was asking if you’d accept if they drafted an offer or some such BS) and everything is fine. I really don’t think firm 2 cares though.

Did you tell Firm 2 you had accepted the offer from Firm 1 before or after they asked you to reconsider?

If you told them before and they still asked you to reconsider, they already knew you would be declining the (supposedly accepted) offer from Firm 1. If you told them after, wouldn't that be tantamount to declining their request to reconsider and the offer? I don't know how the conversation went of course.

As Notinbiglaw said, I don't think its a huge issue. I wouldn't go into it unless asked, and then I would just say that you had accepted in principle but it wasn't an official offer or wasn't confirmed yet or something like that.

I mean firms know for sure people renege. Firms interviewing 3Ls well after they must have accepted return offers from their 2L summers aren’t naive enough to think people would turn down offers just for a chance to interview with them.
