In-House Question
Currently a mid-to-senior level associate at biglaw shop in the Northeast where I do labor & employment. Considering a possible move in-house, and saw opportunity at a large bank. Curious if anyone here does in-house work for any of the major financial services industry players. What is the in-house culture like relative to biglaw? I feel like employment law would probably be a bit more insulated than the types of law that are more directly tied to the core business itself. But curious regardless, and any insights would be appreciated.

I went in-house at a bulge bracket bank after four years in biglaw. Culture varied a decent amount by divisions of the legal group; mine was more chill, but then I’d try to meet up with someone whose team supported probably the busiest group at the bank and they’d seem as flustered and crazed as a biglaw senior associate trying to close a deal. Generally, though, things were a lot more chill than at a firm, you could develop relationship with the business folks you were supporting so things would flow a lot better, and I felt a lot more like a member of the team. The employment law people seemed pretty chill, 9 to 5ish, except when they were at trial or mediation. So if you like the people on your team/your potential manager, I’d go for it. I’ve never met anyone pining to go back to biglaw once going in-house (I’m sure they exist, but they’re in a small minority).
