Attending “callback receptions”

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Aug 14, 2019 10:59 am

How important is this? All these firms have callback receptions and honestly I dont have time for all of them and they just sound stressful AF? How hard should I try to attend these? For some of them the dates dont even work for me and I would have to stay another night or something to attend

If you stay another night they should cover your expenses.

You should go unless you are going to say something stupid at them. The receptions are an opportunity to show that you are more committed than the person who didn't attend. They are also an opportunity to get to know attorneys and recruiters who will want to hire you. It's hard to get to know them if you aren't there. Unless you have an offer you are willing to accept, you should go. You should especially go if you do not yet have an offer.

Honestly they mostly are giant wastes of time but it’s not like you got something more productive to do. If you make a good impression on even one person on the hiring committee, the trip would be worth it.

This is the most important 2-4 weeks of your law career unless you already got a return offer locked up from 1L SA.

Give it everything you got. You can sleep like the dead after. Less stressful than camping the phone waiting for the actual callbacks. Don’t worry. They won’t rescind the callback just because you’re sleeping when they call you.

Agree with notinbiglaw. Making a good impression on at least a few people (and at least a few people with pull on hiring will be there) will go a long way when the hiring folks sit down to discuss who is not only a better candidate, but who seems more committed to and excited about joining the firm. Of course, if you have something really important to get to, then don't miss a friend's wedding or anything. Otherwise, I do think OCI is the time to give it your all. Even if you lightly skim the recruiting forums, you'll see that converting a callback to an offer is difficult, so you want to do everything you can now to yield the best results.

Anecdotally, my firm circulates to the entire office the resumes of the folks who are doing callback interviews that day prior to the reception, so several of the attorneys at the reception will likely know who you are or, sometimes, even be looking for you if they remember something interesting on your resume.

This is TCR. Most likely it won't matter, but it could, and why wouldn't you take every reasonable step possible to maximize your chances of securing a callback/offer?

Unless you already have an offer (not just a callback, a formal offer in hand) you'd prefer to accept over the firm in question. In which case, just cancel and avoid the hassle of both the callback reception and the callback.

In any case, don't stress. You don't need to be some kind of super-charming social butterfly or networker extraordinaire at these receptions. All you need to do is be professional, come across as interested and engaging, and Bob's your uncle. Don't overindulge at the open bar and also don't imitate Cookie Monster at the buffet table, and you'll be just fine.

Aw, Halp, you flatter me. That line was actually inspired by behavior I saw in real life at a reception!

Probably doesn't matter much either way, but it's free food and drink. Just showing up for 30 minutes and having the recruiter person check your name off the list is a good idea. Bonus points if you actually make a connection with someone.

The recruiting folks at my old firm would send out an email the day after these receptions to ask if any students "stood out". Of course we had no way of knowing how much weight was given to responses. I assume it wasn't a lot. But it's a good idea to grit your teeth and go as long as you aren't going to make a horrible impression.
