Can an asso w commercial lit lateral into corp trans?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Aug 13, 2019 8:57 pm

I will be doing commercial lit like antitrust, construction dispute even labor law etc at a small firm. It is a boutique firm focusing on commercial laws in an extremely small market, and they represent large companies. I am not interested in lit but corporate transactional. I am thinking about accepting the offer hoping to lateral into corporate transaction at another firm after a couple years. Is it a plausible scenario?

Not likely unless your antitrust is a lot of clearing mergers/acquisitions with FTC.

Even if you somehow lateral, expect to lose a lot of years of seniority.

Thanks so much. Nope, it will be antitrust issues w local authorities not with FTC.

This job also *sometimes* involves assisting other firms in doing IPO in another jurisdiction and stock purchase. Would this make a difference?

Probably not. That sounds like less than what an SA would get to do.

I went from construction litigation to construction transactional. But the opportunities are few. Best chances are in the Texas area (lots of construction transactional work in the energy industry).

It is not an SA position but a lateral. I am in a non-practicing law position (JD required tho) not inhouse but a client-facing role in a foreign jurisdiction.
