how to find briefs filed?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Aug 12, 2019 5:17 pm

I need to find all briefs filed by a particular attorney in the Supreme Court. I just want to double check the best way to do this - Westlaw? Or does the Supreme Court have an option to view all filings on their website?

Probably Westlaw. The Supreme Court does e-filing now, but the docket only has copies of briefs from the last few years and the search function would only return the names of counsels of record.

Scotusblog and Bloomberg are also good resources to find briefs. SCOTUSblog is free, but not sure how far back it goes (also not sure of its search functionality, so you’d have to know what cases the lawyer was on).

Bloomberg is great for appellate and district court brief pulling - awesome search functionality that isn’t available on pacer. But I’m not sure if you can find Supreme Court briefs there (I’ve never looked). Bloomberg also free if you are in law school (at least when I was in school it was free.) Otherwise, you just have to pay the pacer fees.

The pacer fee for that search could be scary if not done right (or if you find the attorney filed a ton of briefs).

That’s the beauty of Bloomberg — no cost to run the searches. Only pay when you download the briefs (still could add up if there are a lot of briefs).

Ahh, I didn’t remember them not charging you for searches. I would think that would be ungodly expensive for them.

What about this: https://www.supremecourt.gov/docket/docket.aspx

Would that be a complete resource?
