3L massmailing strategy

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Aug 08, 2019 9:32 pm

I would like to switch a market after my 2L SA (V30-40, non-NY major market) due to a family reason. I liked the practice that I have mostly done during summer and thus already arranged my 3L externships relevant to that practice. I applied some firms that have 3L openings for this practice group and now moving to massmailing. Would it be fine if I express my interest in a specific practice when massmailing to firms? I am worried that may limit my chances if the firm is not hiring in that group. T10, around median, fwiw.

There are plenty of threads that will touch on mass-mailing, even as a 3L. The strategy is similar to when you were a 2L (if you mass-mailed at the time). Just hit almost all the T100 firms, maybe customize it slightly depending on the firm.

As far as whether to include a specific practice area, it's really kind of firm dependent. If you hear about a specific group needing an associate then add it, otherwise I would keep it more general unless there's a good reason (although full disclaimer, there is TLS wisdom that advises focusing on a specific field when job-searching as a 3L).

Also just a note, I assume you've checked already, but definitely explore whether your firm has an office in this new location. I know a couple of students who managed to switch offices within their firms, both times in the interest of relationships.
