Canadian wanting to move to NYC - global firm or Canadian-centric firm?

Post by Jyeatbvg » Tue Jul 30, 2019 7:45 pm

Hi everyone,

I am a second year associate in Corporate/Capital Markets/M&A looking to make the leap to NYC in a few years. I've been interviewing with two firms in Toronto and in a best case scenario, I'll have to decide between the two:

Global V50 firm:
Pros: name recognition / some opportunities to work at other offices
Cons: regional office / small corporate group / big portion of files are delegated from U.S. offices (i.e. they act as Canadian counsel)

Top Canadian firm with office in Toronto:
Pros: good work and complex files (in Canada) / big corporate group / known to have great associate development and CLE programs
Cons: no name recognition outside Canada

If the goal is NYC, which would be the better bet?
