Lateral to Brooklyn DA's Office (or Others)

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Jul 28, 2019 2:38 pm

Context: I'm a mid-level big law associate with a background of HYS, COA. I want to become an AUSA, but all of the districts in which I'd want to live are insanely competitive. Perhaps the biggest problem with my application is that there's nothing on my resume demonstrating that I want to be a prosecutor. I very much do, but I didn't really come to that conclusion until around the time I was clerking. By that point, I already had a firm job lined up, and I've been applying to DOJ/USAOs to no avail ever since. I'm now starting to think about ADA work--ideally as a stepping stone to a USAO, but perhaps for the long haul if I like it.

Let's assume I can land an ADA job (a big assumption, I know). My questions are:

1) How is the Brooklyn DA's office these days? Is the work substantive and interesting? Would I handle my own cases and get a decent amount of trial experience early on? I'm asking because I came across this thread from way back in 2011/2012, in which a commenter advised people to "avoid Brooklyn like the plague" because a handful of "executive-level ADAs" take all the interesting cases, no one else gets useful experience, and the office culture is highly political: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=143287
I know that's just one commenter from years ago, but does anyone know whether it accurately describes the office today? Do people like working there?

2) What is the likelihood of being able to lateral from the Brooklyn DA's Office to EDNY? I would have no problem sticking around the DA's office for a long time if that's what it took, but would I age out of EDNY opportunities? I know a lot of USAOs are averse to taking people who are more than 6-7 years out of law school.

3) How are the Queens and Nassau County DA's offices? Do they feed into EDNY?

Also interested in any general thoughts about the viability of Big Law -> ADA -> AUSA. Thanks!

I can’t answer most of your questions but recent hirings suggest the Brooklyn DA’s office is looking to ramp up its white collar/complex investigations. For example: https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2019 ... -to-staff/

Edited to fix typo.
